Google Chrome – the new open-source browser from Google has been launched in beta for Windows this Tuesday (September 2nd 2008) and available for download in over 100 countries. Other than Windows the browser will probably be available for Mac and Linux too in near future.
According to Google – “Google Chrome is a browser that combines a minimal design with sophisticated technology to make the web faster, safer, and easier. On the surface, we designed a browser window that is streamlined and simple. To most people, it isn’t the browser that matters. It’s only a tool to run the important stuff — the pages, sites and applications that make up the web. Like the classic Google homepage, Google Chrome is clean and fast. It gets out of your way and gets you where you want to go.”
Main features of Google Chrome includes the more powerful JavaScript Virtual Machine called V8, Special Tabs, thumbnails of your top sites, the Searchbar (integrated into the address bar), privacy mode (using browser in a privacy mode called Incognito mode will not able to save your history or cookies), launch web applications in browser window, to fight malware and phishing attempts, Google Chrome is constantly downloading lists of harmful sits and more.
Google Chrome seems impressive, though it has tough competition with major browsers like IE, Firefox, Opera, etc. but after seeing the popularity of search engine giant (Google) we can think of something big for Google Chrome. Google on Wednesday announced the launch of mapping tool for India – Google Map Maker. As Google Maps is already a successful name online for finding any location around the world on Internet, the tool is a gift for all Google Maps users. Google Map Maker allows users to add or edit geographical features like roads, business, parks, schools and more on a map of any area. The Hindu recently reported that Indian Supreme Court issued notice to the Centre, Google India, Yahoo India and Microsoft Corporation on a petition to impose a ban on these popular online search engines which have been promoting sex selection techniques.
According to Indian Preconception and Prenatal Diagnostics Techniques Act (PC-PNDT) determination of the sex of unborn baby is illegal. The act also prohibits any advertisements for the same.
A three-Judge Bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and Justices P. Sathasivam and J.M. Panchal issued notice on a writ petition filed by Dr. Sabu Mathew George highlighting the violation of Preconception and Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques Act by the websites.
Counsel Sanjay Parikh submitted that despite bringing the websites to the notice of the departments concerned, no steps were taken to block them. He said the petition was filed for full and effective implementation of the Act.
He sought a direction to the Centre to block all websites, including those of Google, Yahoo and Microsoft, that violated the Act.
Dr. George wanted a direction to the Centre to take punitive and deterrent action against these three companies.
